Ryo was once a soldier, a hardened warrior who put her life on the line without hesitation or regret. Then she met Kei and found someone worth living for.

Now Kei has vanished, and Ryo must once again don the garb of a warrior. However, a life of peaceful labor has dulled her previously sharpened edges, and the mission to save the love of her life may be her final in more ways than one...

Closed Eyes edition by Jerry Bomhan Romance eBooks

This was a beautiful novella about two very different women and the strength of the love between them. Ryo is a wonderful character – strong, capable, yet somewhat uncertain when it comes to Kei. She doesn’t know why Kei loves her, how she ever could, but that doesn’t stop her risking everything to save her. This is mostly Ryo’s story, how she found Kei, how she lost her and how she goes about trying to save her again.

Kei is much softer, her story less told. She’s the daughter left behind when her father and brothers went off to war, a sweet-natured girl who had to learn to fend for herself, but has found love and protection with Ryo. She might not be able to wield a blade or work in the fields, but she has her own strengths – her love being one of them. Because this is mostly Ryo’s story, poor Kei appears mostly as a pawn, moved here and there by other people’s will, yet she has some of her own choices to make when it really matters.

The story is told beautifully, the fights are realistic without being gratuitous and the trials of both Ryo and Kei are told in straight forward, simple terms. If I’m honest, as beautiful as it all was, I didn’t feel a deep emotional connection to the events, though I was rooting for Ryo the whole way. It’s well-crafted and well-told, but not deeply felt. Having said that it was a love story I could firmly believe in, even if I did find parts of the ending a little far-fetched. A worthy addition to the Damsels in Distress collection, and my favorite of all that I’ve read so far.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley. The love between Ryo & Kei have bounds but that love is tested when Kei gets taken by her father to wed into the Royal family. But that is not what she wants but her love is frown upon. You were not allowed to love someone of the same sex. But their love is so kind & caring. Ryo will stop at nothing to get her back she will need to take out her weapons again. She always wanted to be a warrior but it was not allowed her but her father made sure that she had someone to teach her. She was able to join in the war & even went onto being on the Emperor's guard but it was always as a man. She retired from that love but she needs to draw on that knowledge to get Kei back. The path to the Emperor as she will come up against someone with the some skills can she win & save her one true love. There is an unexpected ally that believes that you can love whoever you wish. This is beautifully told love story.
